The club's most important titles are 2 Copa Libertadores, 10 Brazilian National League Titles and 4 national cups (3 Copa do Brasil and 1 Copa dos Campees).
In 2004, after performing poorly for two consecutive seasons in the Srie A, Grmio finished bottom of the league and were relegated to Campeonato Brasileiro's Second Division. Srie B brought even less revenue, which combined with the club's large debt threatented to snowball into Grmio's bankruptcy.
